Winter Dry Eyes… A Few Simple Tips

While you may refer to winter as the wet time of year because of the rain and snow, the atmosphere is actually a lot dryer during the winter, which often causes your eyes to be irritated easily.

Our optometry staff can help you find the most effective options to hydrate your eyes this winter. While you are indoors you can prevent dryness by using a humidifier. Eye doctors recommend using humidifiers in spaces with forced air heating, which can decrease moisture from the air.

Additionally, it’s wise to take extra precautions once you're going outside into the cold air. Keep your eyes protected by putting on a hat with a brim and wearing sunglasses. The point is to protect your eyes from the swirling winds to prevent them from drying out your eyes.

Another practical tip for keeping your eyes moist this dry season, is using high quality eye cream. Our eye care center can recommend the right eye cream that will help you keep the ocular area protected.

Don't forget that if you use contacts it’s important to be particularly careful in the colder months. When possible, make use of rewetting drops often. While you may not recognize it, lenses are like sponges and are required to stay hydrated to keep their shape. If they begin to dry out, the lenses can lose their shape and cling to your eyes, which causes pain and blurriness. So let your lenses drink up…  and make sure to keep them lubricated this winter. With a little knowledge and planning, you can stay clear of the hazards of winter and keep your eyes clear and moisturized the whole season!
