Workplace Vision Wellness Month

March is Workplace Vision Wellness Month, an initiative by Prevent Blindness American (PBA). The aim of this directive is to teach companies and their workers about the importance of vision health, including advice on how to prevent vision-endangering eye incidents.

Every day, people suffer from job related eye injuries that demand medical attention. Safety experts and doctors say that the two main reasons that workers experience eye injuries is either because they fail to use anything to shield their eyes or they are taking the wrong sorts of safety precautions.

Most commonly, eye injuries that occur in the workplace are due to flying particles or falling objects such as building or craft materials that can enter or cause abrasions on the eye. Chemical splashes, gases and lasers can also burn and damage the delicate eyes.

Keeping Safety in Sight

Here are 4 crucial ways to protect your eyes from injury:

  • Learn the eye hazards found at your workplace.
  • Lessen your exposure to risks before even beginning work by asking for machine shields, screens or other safety devices.
  • Request protective glasses that sit properly and provide enough protection for your job. Your optometrist will be able to help to determine the most suitable safety eyewear for your profession.
  • Keep your protective eyewear in great condition, and replace when even just slightly damaged.

Computer Monitors and Healthy Vision

Working with computers or using mobile devices like phones or readers can also be unsafe for your sight. Due to the increase in the use of computers in everyday life, these dangers are becoming increasingly prevalent.

Below are some helpful suggestions to prevent eye strain and visual discomfort when using hand held devices or working on a computer:

Implement the 20-20-20 rule which will help your eyes rest. At every 20 minute interval look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. If using a mobile device, enlarge the text so you'll be able to use it at a distance better for your eyes.

Additionally maintain the brightness of your monitor to a resolution that is not too bright or too dim and position your screen right under eye level to reduce any pressure on your eyes. You should also speak to your eye doctor about computer glasses.
