Treating Cataracts

It's June, which means it's Cataract Awareness Month. Are you aware that cataracts are the main reason behind loss of vision among those 55 and older? In fact, more than fifty percent of the population 65 or older have at the very least, partial cataract development.

So what exactly is a cataract? A cataract is a fogging of the lens in the eye; one that blocks or alters the how light enters into the eye. In the interior part of your eye, the lens is contained in a sealed bag or capsule. As soon as more mature cells stop functioning, they become caught inside the capsule. After some time, more and more cells cease to function and gather, which causes the lens to become veiled, leading to eyesight that is fuzzy or unclear. When it comes to most people, cataracts are a natural side effect of older age. Additional dangers for developing a cataract include obesity, diabetes, hypertension, inflammation in the eye, hereditary influences, eye injuries and smoking.

Throughout the first stages of cataract development, more efficient lighting and eyeglasses may be implemented to reduce the vision problems you might experience. At some point, though, a surgical procedure might be needed to help your eyesight. More than 90 percent of patients who have cataract surgery regain great vision.

If you are in your fifties and perceiving cloudy eyesight, book an appointment to discuss cataracts with your eye care professional. There are treatments available for cataracts, and we know you want to have good vision throughout your golden years.
