A Guide to Summer Eye Care

Now that the summertime is officially here it’s time to keep your eyes protected from the sun and other warm weather dangers.

Here are some pointers on remaining safe in the sun:

  1. Buy glasses that block 100% of UV rays. If your glasses don’t provide 100% UV protection to protect your eyes from harmful UV damage, they may be causing more damage than benefit.  Don’t worry, 100% UV blockage doesn’t mean a higher price – a number of reasonably priced options give full UV defense.

  2. Wear larger shades. When selecting sunglasses, think big. It’s advised to find glasses with broad lenses and wraparound frames.

  3. Wear a wide protective hat or visor. A hat with a wide brim will provide an extra layer of defense before the sun reaches your eyes.

  4. Wear sunglasses when it is cloudy. Even on cloudy days, UV can still reach your eyes and do damage. Even when the sun is hiding, it’s important to stay protected.

  5. Keep a second pair. You never know when your glasses will get lost or broken. Better to be safe than sorry.

  6. Stay hydrated. It’s important to keep your eyes hydrated. Consume a minimum of 2 liters of water each day to prevent dehydrated eyes and skin.

  7. Stay inside during the middle of the day. Stay indoors as much as possible especially in the late morning and afternoon when the sun is at its strongest and the highest levels of UV are in the atmosphere.

  8. Consider polarized lenses. Polarized lenses minimize the reflection off of surfaces such as water. Perfect for a day at the beach or pool, they offer more comfort during outdoor activities.

  9. Use goggles when swimming to keep bacteria and swimming pool chemicals from entering your eyes. Make sure the goggles have UV protection block UV as well, because the sun’s rays reflect off water and can double UV exposure.

  10. Be careful with sunscreen. When applied too close to the eyes it can enter the eye and cause irritation and burning.
