Autumn Ocular Allergy Treatment in Manasquan, NJ

At the end of the summer, many individuals start to suffer from seasonal eye allergies such as hay fever. Above sneezing and a stuffy or runny nose, symptoms that affect the eyes can severely impede one's ability to function as desired.

Eyes are often itchy, swollen, and irritated and often burn or water. Vision can often be affected as well by blurriness or light sensitivity. These symptoms can make it so uncomfortable for those affected that they interfere with work, school, sports and leisure activities.

If you wear contacts, eye allergies can frequently be exacerbated since contact lenses can often collect pollen. Further, we tend to rub eyes that itch, which can cause even more irritation for contact lens wearers. Use of artificial tears can sometimes alleviate symptoms but many contact wearers choose to switch to glasses. If you wear contacts and experience eye allergies, you may want to consider a different brand of contacts, particularly if you aren't using daily disposables which minimize the likelihood of pollen accumulation. You don't have to suffer from your contacts - visit our Manasquan, NJ optometry practice to discuss your options.

For anyone suffering here are some ways to reduce autumn eye allergy symptoms:

  • Avoid outdoor activities when pollen counts are highest (usually mid-morning and early evening)
  • Keep windows closed when possible, especially when driving.
  • Use a clothes dryer rather than hanging clothing out to dry whenever possible.
  • Instead of sweeping, use a damp mop to clean floors, which is more effective at cleaning away allergens.
  • Refrigerate artificial tears or use cold compresses for soothing irritation.
  • Clean areas prone to mold frequently with a bleach solution.

If over the counter medications are not helping a prescription medication may be more effective. In this case, make an appointment with your eye doctor as soon as possible to discuss your options and begin proper treatment. Our Manasquan, NJ optometry office would be happy to assist you in regaining your comfort this fall!
